Impromptu Hotel Room Boudoir

  During a whirlwind leisure trip to Vancouver to see The Cure play a live concert at Deer Lake Park, my partner and model Whiskey Ginger decided to take advantage of our nice hotel room.  

  After a hard night of eating fantastic food (Wildebeest restaurant, Gastown. Check it out) and drinking copious amounts of liquor we spent our last hours before falling into a death slumber shooting this impromptu boudoir set.  I liked the bed, the headboard, the bed covers and especially the ultra bright bedside lamps, and couldn't resist pulling out the camera gear.

  Shot with my trusty Canon 6d using primarily a 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens, although I did attach my nifty fifty 50mm f/1.8 for a few of the shots. The wall towards the foot of the bed was a bit limiting but I think some of these photos turned out remarkably well, especially considering our inebriated condition.

Cumberland Empire Days Parade

  The charming community of Cumberland BC hosts an annual May Day parade and other events on the Victoria Day long Weekend.  Dubbed Empire Days, this event features a beer garden loaded with Lucky lager, food trucks, May pole dancers, and handfuls of other events.  

  I headed down to festivities with my trusty camera with a 70-200mm lens. A good choice for images, but man, that setup gets heavy lugging around all day! Here's a few shots.

Random Doll at the Farmer's Market

  At the local farmers market today I caught a glimpse of a vendor who had a booth that was seemingly empty aside from this one doll.  I am still not sure what they were trying to peddle.  Doll clothes maybe? Macrame backdrops? I have no Idea, but before the Norman Bates looking booth keeper had a chance to accost me with his sales pitch I quickly snapped this picture.  

  I edited this photo (perhaps a little too far) with the Nik suite of software, which Google recently dropped the price to $0. Yes, free. This is actually a really good professional plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom despite my over the top use of it in this case.

The Real McKenzies and Boids play a kick ass gig at The Waverly Hotel

  I Went to Cumberland BC. to watch a couple punk bands play at The Waverly Hotel. This small bar is, in my opinion, the best small venue on the North (Vancouver) Island.  First up were "Boids" A relatively upbeat four piece straight up punk band from Montreal, Quebec.  These guys surprised me in the best possible way.  They were tight, great sounding, and put on a rawkus lively performance.  Check out their new video here.

  The headliners, "The Real McKenzies" are a fairly well known Scottish Canadian punk group, with eight members including two bagpipe players.  These guys have been rocking with their own brand of Celtic "Oi-Oi" punk rock for around 25 years, and are reported to have had over one hundred different members in the lineup over the years.  They had the crowd absolutely rocking. The energy was intense and full of camaraderie and genuine enthusiasm. With their kilts, sporrans and battle vests, they were a delight to shoot. 

  I showed up as merely a fan, donned my kilt and leather jacket and took only my Sony a6000 with the kit lens attached.  I knew full well, I would be taking pictures there, but I didn't want everyone else to know it, or draw too much attention to myself.  This diminutive powerhouse of a camera was a perfect tool for the job, and amidst the couple dozen cell phone screens lit from the audience, nobody even batted an eye towards me.

  Anyways, I had an absolute blast and encourage anyone to go see a show from either of these bands, or to give them a listen.

Wow, It has been quite awhile since I posted here!

I'm busy working on editing a photoshoot that I'm really excited about. I thought I would pop in and say Hi though.  Stay tuned for a deluge of photos and posts in the next couple weeks though.
